You’ll collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to craft innovative and sustainable solutions while adhering to the highest industry standards. We value diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplace and encourage all individuals—regardless of background or belief—to bring their full selves to work and contribute meaningfully.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, your expertise will be critical in ensuring the successful delivery of design and engineering components across exciting and challenging projects. Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the development and design of Mechanical Engineering solutions across multiple projects within the MEP sector, ensuring compliance with UK building regulations and standards.
  • Oversee the preparation of detailed designs, specifications, and calculations for HVAC, plumbing, and other mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including electrical and civil engineers, architects, and project stakeholders, to deliver integrated design solutions.
  • Conduct energy efficiency assessments and optimize system designs for sustainability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and design technicians, fostering an inclusive and empowering team environment.
  • Utilize software tools (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit MEP, IES, or similar) to produce accurate mechanical designs and conduct simulations.
  • Act as a key client liaison, ensuring the delivery of exceptional customer service while managing expectations and promoting long-term relationships.
  • Stay updated on industry standards, technological advancements, and regulatory changes impacting UK MEP projects.
  • Drive innovation to enhance design methodologies, processes, and workflows.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate for the Senior Mechanical Engineer role should have the following qualifications:

Required:

  • A Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (Master’s degree preferred).
  • Chartered status (or working towards chartership) with a recognized professional institution such as CIBSE or the IMechE.
  • Extensive experience in Mechanical Design within the UK Engineering Design and MEP sector, with a proven track record of delivering large-scale, complex projects.
  • Proficiency in utilizing engineering design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, IES, or similar).
  • Strong knowledge of UK building codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and analytical skills.
  • Proven leadership and mentorship capabilities with a commitment to fostering a culture of inclusion.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage with team members, clients, and stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Experience in sustainable design and renewable energy projects.
  • Familiarity with BIM Level 2 protocols and other digital design processes.

Day-to-Day

You can expect no two days in this role to be the same. Your typical responsibilities include:

  1. Reviewing and refining detailed engineering designs, calculations, and drawings for ongoing projects.
  2. Participating in team meetings to align project objectives, timelines, and requirements.
  3. Attending client and stakeholder meetings to present designs, gather feedback, and provide input on project strategies.
  4. Collaborating across departments (i.e., electrical and plumbing teams) to integrate multi-disciplinary designs seamlessly.
  5. Supporting junior engineers by reviewing their work, providing constructive feedback, and conducting knowledge-sharing sessions.
  6. Conducting site visits to inspect ongoing construction and ensure adherence to design specifications.
  7. Researching advancements in MEP trends and technologies and advising on their practical application.
  8. Preparing reports and documentation for project updates, approvals, and evaluations.
  9. Promoting an inclusive team culture where ideas from all perspectives are welcomed and respected.

Join us in shaping the future of MEP systems while contributing to a supportive, innovative, and collaborative workplace. If you’re passionate about mechanical engineering, sustainability, and leading-edge design solutions, we’d love to hear from you. Please apply to sam.binning@jamesgrayrecruitment.com
