Civil Engineer Highways

Our client is a leading civil engineering and infrastructure consultancy with a strong presence across Scotland and the UK. Specialising in transport, highways, and major infrastructure projects, they deliver innovative, sustainable engineering solutions for both public and private sector clients. Due to continued growth, they are seeking a skilled Civils Highway Engineer to join their Edinburgh team.

Role Overview

The Civils Highway Engineer will support the planning, design, and delivery of a range of highway and infrastructure schemes. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to produce high-quality design outputs across all project stages—from concept and feasibility through to detailed design and construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver highway geometry designs, junction layouts, road alignments, and active-travel schemes.

  • Prepare detailed design drawings, models, and specifications using software such as Civil 3D, OpenRoads, or similar.

  • Carry out feasibility studies, options assessments, and technical reports.

  • Undertake drainage design, earthworks modelling, and pavement design as required.

  • Support the preparation of contract documents, bill of quantities, and tender packages.

  • Ensure designs meet DMRB, local authority standards, and project-specific requirements.

  • Liaise with clients, project managers, and external stakeholders.

  • Contribute to project planning, risk assessments, and design reviews.

  • Assist in mentoring junior engineers and technicians.

  • Maintain high levels of quality assurance and compliance with industry best practice.

Required Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Demonstrable experience in highway or infrastructure design within a consultancy or contractor environment.

  • Strong working knowledge of relevant standards (DMRB, TSRGD, local road design guidance).

  • Proficiency with industry design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MX, or OpenRoads.

  • Experience in drainage and earthworks design beneficial.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively within a hybrid team environment.


Desirable Skills

  • Progress toward professional registration (IEng/CEng) with ICE or CIHT.

  • Experience working on Scottish local authority or Transport Scotland projects.

  • Understanding of sustainable urban drainage systems (SuDS).

  • Familiarity with project management tools and BIM workflows.
