Senior Quantity Surveyor – Civil & Infrastructure

Glasgow or Edinburgh

James Gray Recruitment is delighted to be partnering with a well-established and growing civil engineering contractor with a strong presence across Scotland. With a secured, long-term pipeline of work spanning energy infrastructure, rail, utilities and large-scale earthworks, this is a business delivering technically complex projects that play a key role in Scotland’s infrastructure and energy transition.

The Business

Our client operates as a principal contractor on major civil and infrastructure schemes ranging from multi-million-pound frameworks to nationally significant projects. Their expertise includes:

  • Substations and power transmission infrastructure
  • Rail and transportation projects
  • Heavy civils, structures and earthworks
  • Utilities and drainage schemes

Working under NEC3, NEC4 and FIDIC contracts, they are known for strong commercial governance, collaborative client relationships and a pragmatic, delivery-focused culture.

The Role

As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will take commercial ownership of key project packages, working closely with operational teams and senior stakeholders.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Full commercial management of subcontract packages from procurement to final account
  • NEC contract administration and negotiation
  • Preparation of applications for payment and cost value reconciliations (CVRs)
  • Monitoring cost performance and risk management
  • Providing commercial advice to site teams and project leadership
  • Managing client and supply chain relationships
  • Mentoring and developing junior members of the commercial team

You will have real influence over commercial strategy and project profitability, not just reporting responsibilities.

What We’re Looking For?

  • Proven experience at Senior QS level, or an experienced QS ready to step up
  • Strong working knowledge of NEC3 / NEC4 (FIDIC advantageous)
  • Background in civil engineering, infrastructure or major projects
  • Experience managing subcontractors commercially through the full project lifecycle
  • Confident communicator with the ability to positively influence outcomes
  • Relevant qualification (Degree or HNC/HND)

Experience with target cost contracts or Early Contractor Involvement would be advantageous but is not essential.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

  • Long-term, secured project pipeline in Scotland
  • Major infrastructure schemes with technical complexity
  • Clear progression routes within a growing commercial team
  • Supportive leadership and structured commercial processes
  • £65,000 + car allowance
  • 8% matched pension
  • Private healthcare
  • 33 days holiday plus wellbeing and volunteering days
  • Living-away allowance where applicable

This role will suit a commercially astute QS who enjoys complex infrastructure work and wants to be part of projects that genuinely shape Scotland’s future.

If you’re not actively looking but would consider the right opportunity, apply, and we can have a confidential chat. All discussions will be handled with complete discretion.
