Senior/Principal Design Engineer (Bridges)

James Gray Recruitment is delighted to be recruiting on behalf of our client, a leading consultancy recognised for its delivery of major bridge and infrastructure projects across the UK. We are seeking a highly skilled Senior or Principal Design Engineer (Bridges) to join their established Glasgow team.

This role is suited to a proven bridge engineer who can lead technically, manage key project deliverables, and contribute to significant national transport schemes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver the design and assessment of bridge and civil structures from concept through detailed design.

  • Provide technical oversight, ensuring all designs meet relevant standards and client specifications.

  • Produce and review analysis, calculations, drawings, specifications, and technical reports.

  • Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams and maintain strong client communication.

  • Offer guidance and mentorship to junior engineers, supporting technical development within the team.

  • Manage work packages, project programmes, commercial aspects, and ensure quality delivery.

  • Undertake site inspections, surveys, and provide technical support during construction.

  • Contribute to bids, proposals, and wider work-winning activity.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with ICE or IStructE — mandatory requirement.

  • Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Extensive experience in bridge design and assessment within highways, rail, or major infrastructure projects.

  • Strong working knowledge of Eurocodes, DMRB, Network Rail standards, and relevant industry guidance.

  • Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., LUSAS, MIDAS, SAP2000, etc.).

  • Proven ability to lead design elements and coordinate effectively across disciplines.

  • Excellent communication and client-facing skills.

Desirable

  • Experience in both new-build and strengthening/refurbishment schemes.

  • Knowledge of BIM methodologies and digital design tools.

  • Experience working on UK national infrastructure frameworks.
