Geotechnical Engineer
Our client is a leading multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with a strong reputation across the highways, buildings, and rail sectors. Known for delivering innovative, technically robust solutions, they are expanding their geotechnical capability within their Glasgow office and are seeking a motivated Geotechnical Civil Engineer to support a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and development projects across the UK.
Role Overview
The Geotechnical Civil Engineer will contribute to the investigation, analysis, and design of geotechnical solutions across highways, building structures, and rail infrastructure. Working as part of an integrated civil and structural engineering team, you will support projects from feasibility through detailed design and construction, ensuring safe, sustainable, and cost-effective outcomes.
Key Responsibilities

Plan, manage, and interpret ground investigations, including borehole logs, trial pits, and in-situ testing.

Carry out geotechnical analysis and design, including earthworks, foundations, retaining walls, slope stability, ground improvement, and soil–structure interaction.

Support multidisciplinary design teams on highways, buildings, and rail projects.

Produce geotechnical reports, factual and interpretative GI reports, design calculations, and risk assessments.

Prepare drawings, design models, and specifications using relevant software (e.g., GeoStudio, PLAXIS, Wallap, Slope/W, Civil 3D).

Liaise with clients, contractors, geologists, civil/structural engineers, and environmental specialists.

Provide geotechnical input to option assessments, feasibility studies, and value engineering exercises.

Ensure compliance with standards such as EC7, DMRB, Network Rail standards, and relevant industry guidance.

Assist with site supervision during ground investigation and construction phases.

Mentor junior staff and contribute to team development where required.
Required Qualifications & Experience

Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, or related discipline.

Experience in geotechnical design within highways, buildings, rail, or multidisciplinary infrastructure environments.

Strong understanding of geotechnical principles, soil mechanics, and foundation engineering.

Familiarity with UK ground investigation practices and soil/rock logging standards.

Competency with geotechnical analysis software (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, Slope/W) and general CAD/BIM tools.

Good written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.

Ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid team setting.
Desirable Skills

Progress toward chartership with ICE or Geological Society (CEng or CGeol).

Experience with Network Rail and/or Transport Scotland standards.

Knowledge of ground improvement techniques, piling design, or earthworks specification.

Understanding of contaminated land and geohazard assessments.
