The Opportunity

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Site Engineer to join a Tier 1 civil engineering contractor on a landmark £107 million marine infrastructure project at Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay.

This is a long-term project running through to 2029, offering an excellent opportunity for a Site Engineer to gain valuable experience working on a major marine, civil engineering and transport infrastructure scheme.

The project will involve a significant redevelopment of the existing ferry terminal and surrounding harbour infrastructure, including major marine construction, land reclamation, roads, quay works and associated infrastructure.

This role would be particularly well suited to a Site Engineer with 2+ years’ experience who is looking to develop their technical knowledge, work on a major project and gain exposure to a wider range of civil and marine engineering activities.

The Project

The £107 million redevelopment will include a wide range of civil and marine engineering works, including:

• New ferry berth and linkspan infrastructure
• Major marine construction works
• Land reclamation and new marshalling areas
• New and upgraded roads and associated infrastructure
• Dredging and marine works
• Fendering and quay infrastructure
• Extended commercial quay and fishing berth
• Shore power and electrical infrastructure
• EV charging facilities
• New ferry terminal facilities
• Sustainable transport and active travel improvements

The Role

As Site Engineer, you will play a key role in supporting the site management team and ensuring works are delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Setting out and levelling using GPS and Total Station equipment
• Supporting the Site Agent and wider project management team with the delivery of civil engineering works
• Ensuring works are constructed in accordance with drawings, specifications and approved methodologies
• Reviewing and maintaining construction drawings and technical documentation
• Working closely with subcontractors, suppliers and the wider site team
• Supporting the development and implementation of short-term look-ahead programmes
• Monitoring progress against programme and highlighting potential delays or risks
• Maintaining accurate daily site records covering labour, plant, materials and subcontractor activities
• Supporting the management and close-out of NCRs
• Assisting with quality inspections and ensuring works meet project requirements
• Identifying technical, programme and commercial issues and escalating them to the management team
• Supporting the preparation of progress reports
• Ensuring all works comply with company SHEQ procedures
• Working closely with subcontractors to ensure RAMS are understood and implemented
• Maintaining accurate records relating to variations and potential commercial or contractual issues

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

• 2+ years’ experience working as a Site Engineer
• HND or Degree in Civil Engineering, or an equivalent qualification
• Previous experience within a civil engineering contractor environment
• Strong setting-out experience
• Competence using GPS and/or Total Station
• Good understanding of civil engineering construction methods
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications
• Strong communication and organisational skills
• Full UK driving licence
• A proactive approach to problem solving and project delivery
• A willingness to work away from home Monday–Friday

Previous experience within marine, coastal, ports, harbour, infrastructure, roads or heavy civils would be advantageous but is not essential.
