James Gray Recruitment are recruiting for a Principal Structural Engineer on behalf of a well-established and highly respected multidisciplinary engineering consultancy.

With a long-standing reputation for delivering innovative engineering solutions across the built environment, our client works on a broad range of high-profile projects throughout the UK across commercial, industrial, healthcare, education, residential, leisure and infrastructure sectors. The business is recognised for its collaborative culture, technical excellence and director-led project delivery approach.

The Role

Due to continued growth, our client is seeking an experienced Principal Structural Engineer to join their established engineering team. This is a senior leadership opportunity suited to an ambitious engineer looking to play a key role in project delivery, client management and team development.

The successful candidate will lead structural engineering projects from concept through to completion, managing multidisciplinary coordination while ensuring technical quality and commercial performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of structural engineering projects across multiple sectors
  • Manage project teams, resources and programme delivery
  • Produce and review structural calculations, reports and technical specifications
  • Oversee the preparation of drawings and BIM coordination
  • Liaise directly with clients, architects, contractors and external stakeholders
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and technicians
  • Attend project meetings and site inspections
  • Ensure compliance with relevant UK standards, regulations and health & safety requirements
  • Support business development activities and maintain strong client relationships
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and technical excellence across the business

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status (MIStructE or MICE preferred)
  • Significant experience within a UK consulting engineering environment
  • Strong technical background in structural design across a variety of building types
  • Proficient in industry-standard structural design software
  • Experience managing projects and leading engineering teams
  • Strong communication and client-facing skills
  • Knowledge of BIM processes and collaborative project delivery
  • Commercial awareness and ability to manage project budgets and deliverables

Desirable Experience

  • Experience working on large-scale or complex multidisciplinary projects
  • Temporary works, refurbishment or industrial sector experience
  • Experience acting as lead consultant or coordinating multidisciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of sustainability and low-carbon design principles
