Principal Highways Engineer

We are looking for an experienced Principal Highways Engineer to join our clients growing team in either Glasgow or Edinburgh. This is a key leadership role offering the opportunity to shape and deliver a wide range of highways and infrastructure projects across Scotland.

The Role
As a Principal Highways Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of highways schemes from concept through to construction. You’ll play a central role in project leadership, client engagement, and technical excellence, while supporting the development of junior engineers within the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of highways and infrastructure projects
  • Manage multidisciplinary teams and coordinate with clients and stakeholders
  • Oversee technical outputs, ensuring compliance with relevant standards and regulations
  • Prepare and review designs, drawings, reports, and specifications
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members
  • Support business development activities, including client liaison and bid preparation
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to a high standard

What We’re Looking For

  • Extensive experience in highways engineering and project delivery
  • Strong technical expertise in highways design (e.g. drainage, alignment, junction design)
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or equivalent
  • Proven leadership and project management experience
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Familiarity with relevant UK standards and design guidance
